For Chrismas in 1991 my wife Ginger gave me a present that would change my life. It was a gift cirtificate for an aerobatic ride in a glider at the Estrella Sailport soth of Phoenix Arizona. It was the biggest thrill of my life. The ride was in a Grob 103 fiberglass sailplane and the pilot did loops, hammerhead stalls and an inverted high speed pass close to the ground before landing. It was an incredible gift! The Christmas of '92 she topped that gift by giving me a gift cirtificate for a mini course on flying gliders. It included the book "The Joy of Soaring", a log book, two lessons and a T-shirt. I was hooked. Because of our life style it took a while to get in enough training but in July of '95 I received my private pilot's licence for gliders.
Flying gliders is the most satisfying thing that I have learned to do in my life. The process of becoming a pilot has had far reaching effects on all aspects of my life. The feeling I get soaring high above the earth, perhaps with an eagle, just can't be described. Unlike conventional flight, with sailplanes, you fly entirely with your mind.
